EO Johnson Digital Copier Hard Drives Safe
CBS News reported this week on the security risks that used digital copiers present. The hard drives in digital copiers store images of every document copied, scanned, or emailed by the machine. If those hard drives are not properly scrubbed when the machine is decommissioned, the company is at risk of compromising their personal information. Depending on the business and the information stored, the result of comprised information could be devastating.
The CBS report specifically revealed used machines up for sale that had been in use at two divisions of the Buffalo New York Police Department, a New York construction company, and a New York insurance company. Already in a warehouse up for resale, these machines contained private business and customer information.
EO Johnson Office Technologies customers can feel confident when sending their used copiers back to EO Johnson. “We have a policy in place to scrub data from the hard drives of returning equipment,” said Roger King, president/COO – EO Johnson Office Technologies. “Bottom line, our policy states that the information must be destroyed.”
In destroying the data, the customer has three options:
1. A hard drive/memory clear. This is the most common procedure, and there is no cost to
the customer.
2. A complete data wipe that is Department of Defense certified (DoD 5220.22M) and
guarantees that all data is scrubbed. There is a labor cost charged to the customer for
this option.
3. Removal of hard drive from the machine with the option of shredding the hard drive.
There is a charge to customer for a new hard drive, labor, and shredding.
EO Johnson takes additional precautions regarding machine hard drives. When a hard drive is installed in a machine, a “hard drive clear” is performed. Additionally, in the event a machine needs to be brought to EO Johnson for a service issue, the customer determines if the hard drive/memory should be cleared.
