Do you wonder whether or not to call your local technician or just fix your multifunction device yourself? EO Johnson experts decode when you can do it yourself and when to call the experts with these common concerns:

Paper Jams

When to fix: If you can physically see the paper jam, follow the machine instructions to remove it carefully. Make sure not to rip the paper out of the machine, which could lead to a jam build up.

When to call: Torn paper in the machine can lead to a bigger jam and problem. If you cannot see the jam or you think the paper fragmented, call a technician.

Copy quality

When to fix: If your machine is giving the change the toner alert, follow manufacturer instructions to change the toner. Quality of paper copies should increase.

When to call: When the change toner warning is not displayed, the printer may have dirty optics. The Optics can be extremely technical to clean, so professional service is the best choice.

Be careful when changing toner, as technicians are often needed to clean the spills!

Print drivers

When to fix: If you have printer servers installed on the computer network, take the proper steps to download the print drivers from the server to your computer, by means of the install option.

When to call: If your print drivers need to be directly installed to your computer (no print servers available, the process may be a bit more complicated. To address issues, call your technician.

* For toner spills, call a professional to clean up the spills. The micro-fine toner particles can leave clouds of dust if you try to clean up with a household vacuum. DO NOT clean up with any form of heat!

Here are some additional tips for your multifunction devices:

1. Choose laser quality paper over ink-jet.

Laser quality papers, often found in bulk qualities at office supply stores are made to work with toner. Fibers in laser paper often absorb toner better than ink-jet paper, which is made to have ink dry on the surface.

2. Shutdown correctly.

A quick reboot to your printer can make all the difference. While this action can seem simple, make sure to follow directions listed on the machine to turn off the system correctly. After waiting about 10-15 seconds, turn the machine back on.

3. Know the difference of print vs. copy settings.

While print and copy settings may seem similar, the methods for editing these are actually different. To change print settings, edit through your desktop print options. In order to change the copy settings, go to the machine.
